Wills Week

Martine Swaep and Sandra Bowden from our Private Client team recently took part in the ‘Wills Week’ scheme in support of St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds.  The scheme sees local solicitors prepare straightforward Wills in return for a suitable donation to the hospice.

Greene & Greene participated for the week commencing 27 June 2016.  The scheme was well publicised and by mid-May both members of the team were fully booked with an additional list of clients awaiting cancellations.

Donations of £6,510 were received and, with £1,280 of gift aid, this means that the hospice will receive £7,790 from Greene & Greene and clients.

Martine commented:

“It was a very busy week; we saw several new clients and advised them about the Will making process.

We often have to explain to clients the importance of having a Will, not only to deal with the money side of matters and to make sure that the individual’s estate passes to those they wish, but also to ensure that named guardians are mentioned if young children are involved.

The week is always a busy one and it takes a lot of work, but seeing how much we have raised this year makes all those extra hours worthwhile.  Some clients mentioned that they had personal experience of the work of the hospice this year and this was a good way of supporting a cause close to their hearts.  Their generous donations will go some way to meeting the daily running costs of the hospice, which are currently around £16,000 per day.”

If you are considering making a Will please contact Martine Swaep (martineswaep@greene-greene.com or 01284 717458) or Sandra Bowden (sandrabowden@greene-greene.com or 01284 717411) who would be happy to talk through the process and advise of estimated costs.

I'm a CEO - Get Me Out of Here!

"I am well versed with ‘Trials’, but usually in the context of my day job as a Family Lawyer within the Greene & Greene Dispute Resolution Department.

Bush Tucker Trials however present a somewhat different challenge!!

On Friday, 17 April 2015 a group of local business people (myself included) will be undergoing a series of trials in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care.

The trials include:

  • The Cockroach Challenge;
  • Feely Boxes;
  • Drive Yourself Around the Bend;
  • Ploughmans Lunch; and
  • Eating Challenge.

All of which sound rather unpleasant, but it is in aid of a really deserving charity.

My aim is to raise at least £1,000 for St Nicholas Hospice Care.

For those of you who may not be familiar with their work, St Nicholas Hospice Care has provided care, comfort and advice to thousands of people throughout West Suffolk and are an independent charity caring for patients with life-threatening illnesses and supporting those who care for them.

It would be a great help if you could find your way to assisting me in attaining my sponsorship target.

Here is the link to my Just Giving webpage - www.justgiving.com/Stuart-Hughes2

Thank you in advance for any kind support that you are able to provide.”

Greene & Greene sponsor Classic & Sports Cars by the Lake in aid of St Nicholas Hospice

The fifth annual Classic & Sports Cars by the Lake was held on Sunday 31st August 2014 at Hall Farm, Fornham St Martin, Bury St Edmunds, the home of Gina and Andrew Long. Greene & Greene were delighted to be the main sponsor.

The show has grown year on year and has become a highlight on the regional social calendar. Over 600 celebrated classic cars, motorbikes and modern sports cars were on display in a beautiful rural setting. In excess of 5,300 visitors attended the day and over £31,000 was raised for the West Suffolk charity, St Nicholas Hospice Care. This takes the total raised for the Hospice by the five shows to £120,000. The event was organised by Austin Cornish and the Hospice’s Special Events Fundraising Committee.

Greene & Greene were featured on BBC Radio Suffolk’s broadcast from the show and the firm presented the post-war best in show trophy. A competition was held to ‘Guess the mileage of the Bentley Continental GT’, which was displayed on the firm’s stand. This proved to be a popular attraction and the prize, a magnum of champagne, was won by Claire Pearce.

Wills Week 2014

Greene & Greene are delighted to be taking part in Wills Week 2014 to raise funds for St. Nicholas Hospice Care in Bury St Edmunds.  Martine Swaep, a member of the Greene & Greene Private Client team, will be spending much of this week meeting with clients and drafting standard form Wills in return for a suitable donation to the Hospice instead of paying a fee to Greene & Greene.

Martine, who is a member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners, the Association of Taxation Technicians and the Association of Accounting Technicians says:

“I have had personal experience of the Hospice and the fantastic job it does.  Not only for the person that needs the care but also the support they provide to family and friends at a difficult time.  The Hospice really is invaluable and I am happy that Greene & Greene are able to help in this way to raise funds.”

In 2013 Wills Week helped to raise over £16,000 for the Hospice.  This goes some way to helping fund the Hospice which needs to raise more than £11,000 a day to continue to help the people in the local community.

Martine is now fully booked for Wills Week 2014 but please contact her on 01284 717458 or martineswaep@greene-greene.com for assistance.

Greene & Greene to sponsor the Bury Rugby Club's Memorial Cycle Ride

On 3 March 1974 18 members of the Bury St Edmund’s Rugby Club were amongst the total of 345 people who died in a plane crash in France.

The team were attending a Five Nations International but opted to take an earlier flight back from Orly, France after the postponement of a friendly match on that day. It was shortly after take-off that the plane crashed into the Ermenonville Forest with the loss of all on board.

Many families in Bury St Edmunds were affected and the Rugby Club set up a Disaster Fund. Such was the impact of this loss, 2,500 mourners attended a memorial service at St Edmundsbury Cathedral.

The Bury Rugby Club and individuals connected with those who were lost are holding a 310 mile sponsored cycle ride from the crash site at Ermenonville in France to the Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club in May starting on 7 May 2014. It is expected that over 85 riders will take part. The money donated will be divided between the Bury Rugby Club and St Nicholas’ Hospice in Bury St Edmunds.

Greene & Greene are pleased to be able to support the event as sponsors. The firm was heavily involved at the time of the accident and for years afterwards to help many families caught up in the tragedy. Greene & Greene were one of the co-ordinating firms for the accident claims brought in the USA against McDonnell Douglas and others.
